Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources

Although Karshi State University (KSU) is a land-based university and does not operate in a coastal or marine environment, its environmental sustainability activities contribute indirectly to the prevention of water pollution and the responsible use of freshwater resources. These activities are relevant to SDG 14 through pollution prevention, wastewater management, water-quality monitoring and environmental awareness.
KSU's water-management practices include closed water-management systems and wastewater treatment measures, which help reduce the risk of uncontrolled discharge and associated pollution of water systems. Water quality is monitored through the University's water purification and storage systems, supporting responsible water use and the maintenance of appropriate water quality for campus needs.
The University also conducts environmental education and awareness activities addressing pollution prevention, responsible water use, waste management and broader environmental sustainability. These activities contribute to building awareness of the relationship between land-based pollution and the protection of aquatic ecosystems.
The university operates a closed water management system designed to protect water resources from contamination.
Key measures include:
- 23 covered water reservoirs that help prevent contamination from dust, debris, and surface runoff.
- 15 artesian wells supplying groundwater for university needs.
- Water purification using ASMOS technology to produce safe drinking water.
- Regular water-quality testing and monitoring by four qualified specialists.
- Routine inspections and technical maintenance to reduce the risk of contamination and accidental pollution.
- Preventive maintenance of water infrastructure to reduce leaks and uncontrolled releases.
These measures help protect groundwater quality and minimize pollution risks associated with campus operations.
All university buildings are connected to the regional municipal sewer network. Wastewater generated on campus is transferred to the regional system for treatment, preventing direct discharge into the surrounding environment.

IndicatorInformation
Annual wastewater discharge into the regional sewer networkApproximately 60,000 m³

Sewer infrastructureUnderground pipelines connecting university buildings to the regional network
Preventive measuresRegular pipeline maintenance, inspections, and technical monitoring
Main objectivePrevent leakage, contamination, and uncontrolled wastewater discharge

Cooperation with the regional wastewater organization supports responsible sewage management and compliance with applicable sanitary and environmental requirements.
Karshi State University implements measures to conserve water and reduce the risk of environmental contamination.
- Non-potable technical water is used to irrigate green areas, reducing the consumption of drinking water.
- Rainwater collected through roof drainage systems is reused for watering green spaces.
- Water reservoirs and distribution infrastructure are regularly maintained.
- Water quality is monitored to prevent contamination and bacterial pollution.
- Students and staff are encouraged to adopt responsible water-use practices.
These activities support the protection of water resources and help minimize the potential environmental impacts of campus operations.
